New Open Access option on Environmental Modelling & Software

Dear all,

as editors of the journal  Environmental Modelling & Software we have just received this letter from Elsevier which informs us on the possibility to publish Open Access papers on EMS and communicates a reduction on the price to be paid by authors to take this option. Moreover, Open Access papers will be published according to a Creative Commons license of the author’s choice. Click on the “read more” link to discover the full details.

EMS Position Papers are now open access

Environmental Modelling & Software Position Papers now freely accessible

The aim of Environmental Modelling and Software is to improve our capacity to represent, understand, predict or manage the behavior of environmental systems at all practical scales, and to communicate those improvements to a wide scientific and professional audience.

Of special interest are generic methods in modelling and/or software that are applicable across several environmental domains (e.g. optimisation, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, parameter estimation, stakeholder engagement), as well as modelling and/or software approaches and technology that integrate disciplinary contributions for assessing environmental issues and providing decision support for making tradeoffs.

The journal has published several Position Papers on key topics within its aims and scope.

Position Papers aim to synthesize some key aspect of the knowledge platform for environmental modelling and software issues. The review process is twofold following a diverse collaborative effort – a normal external review process and an extensive review by EMS Board members.

These papers are now available and freely accessible on the journal homepage in a dedicated section.

EMS Position Papers

The aim of Position Papers is to represent a view of a specific topic and issue, which is supported and shared by the Editorial Board of the Environmental Modelling & Software journal. Yet, the Position Papers shall not be just academic exercises: on the contrary, they must be a source of useful information, building on and synthesising our knowledge, and contributing to the delivery of good practices in the difficult tasks of modelling, understanding, predicting and managing environmental systems and developing associated software applications.

Here you can find links to all published Position Papers, from the most recent to the first ones.

The papers can be read from the iEMSs 2012 Procedings (link on the right) once they become available. Congratulations to all awardees!

iEMSs 2012 Student Presentation Awards

It is now a tradition that students attending a iEMSs conference can ask to participate to the Best Presentation award. The prize is given after a thorough examination led by a specific Committee (special thanks to Susan Cuddy for having led the works of this devoted group of people). This year, at iEMSs 2012, the following young researchers were awarded:

  1. Niklaus Lehmann (ETH Zürich), for the presentation of the paper “Adapting towards climate change: A whole-farm approach” co-authored with Robert Finger
  2. Gunnar Dressler (UFZ Leipzig) for the paper ” Mobility – a panacea for pastoralism? An ecological-economic model- ling approach” co-authored with Birgit Müller and Karin Frank
  3. Joseph Kasprzyk (Penn State, USA) for the paper “Many-Objective Robust Decision Making for Water Supply Portfolio Planning Under Deep Uncertainty” co-authored with Shanthi Nataraj, Patrick Reed, and Robert Lempert
