Call For Papers: Innovative Techniques for Quantitative Scenarios in Energy and Environmental Research
We are launching a new Thematic Issue of the Environmental Modelling & Software journal. The guest editors are:
- Celine Guivarch (CIRED, France)
- Evelina Trutnevyte (UCL Energy Institute, UK & ETH Zurich, Switzerland)
- Robert Lempert (RAND Corporation, USA)
They will also be assisted and guided by one of the Editors of EM&S, namely Alexey Voinov.
Quantitative scenarios form the core of the future analysis in energy, climate and environmental research. A growing number of researchers worldwide have started using innovative techniques for developing, analyzing and choosing quantitative scenarios. Some of these techniques involve a large number of scenarios. Different rationales motivate these researchers: better system understanding, uncertainty analysis, development of robust strategies, selection of a small set of scenarios, ability to link storylines with quantitative scenarios. These techniques are tools to provide both novel research insights and policy- relevant scenario exercises. In this light, this TI aims to synthesize the state-of- the-art research with innovative techniques for quantitative scenarios, gather these state-of-the-art techniques into a toolbox, identify knowledge gaps and draw avenues for future research.
SCOPE OF THE THEMATIC ISSUE (TI)
In order to synthesize and progress research in this area, researchers are invited to contribute with original papers, dealing with innovative scenario techniques in energy and environmental research. These techniques shall refer to the development, analysis and choice of scenarios, which are outputs or inputs of quantitative models. The scenarios can be used for improving both research knowledge or decision support. In particular, contributions are sought in these methodological areas:
• Building and analyzing large numbers of quantitative scenarios:
o Modeldevelopmentsforgeneratinglargenumbers;
o Statistical and other techniques for analyzing large numbers of scenarios;
o Visualization and interactive techniques.
• Choosing small sets of relevant scenarios.
• Linking approaches for scenario development, analysis and choice:
o Engaging decision makers,stakeholders and experts;
o Linking qualitative and quantitativ eapproaches;
o Linking multiple, diverse quantitative approaches;
TIMETABLE
o Developing, analyzing and choosing cross-scale scenarios in space and time.
• Evaluation of scenario processes and products.
The papers shall (i) present the development and testing of new scenario techniques or (ii) apply existing techniques in new ways. Real-world applications at various scales in energy, climate, water, and other environmental and resource management fields are of particular interest.
The Guest Editors invite the worldwide research community, including, but not limited to the members of iEMSs to participate in the development of this TI through either submitting or reviewing papers.
• 1 December 2014: Deadline for extended abstracts (up to 1,000 words, including 5-6 key references) to be sent to the lead guest editor by email (guivarch@centre-cired.fr)
• 15 January 2015: Feedback on the abstract and notification on the invitation to submit a full paper
• 1 June 2015: Final deadline for full paper submissions
• 1 December 2015: Deadline for paper reviews and editorial decisions
In order to guarantee a timely publication, once the Guest Editors have approved the abstract, authors can submit their manuscripts at any time from now until 1 June 2015 at the latest. These manuscripts will undergo a review process and will appear online as soon as possible. For their manuscripts to be included in the TI, the authors must still submit an extended abstract by 1 December 2014. If the already submitted, reviewed and even accepted manuscripts will not be seen to fit the scope of TI, they will be then published as part of regular issues of Environmental Modelling & Software.
• Please prepare your manuscript according to the Guide for Authors online at: http://www.elsevier.com/journals/environmental-modelling-and- software/1364-8152/guide-for-authors
